Fort Ord Offering Affordable HousingBack to News

MONTEREY, Calif. – Monterey County is one of the most expensive places to live on the Central Coast. Some say that a new housing project won’t solve the housing crisis, but it’s a start and will help.

30% of the homes in the East Garrison Housing Development are considered affordable, and are aimed at families earning below and slightly above median income.

The area’s high housing prices have pushed some families out of the area and made homeownership a distant dream for many.

The East Garrison Housing Development on the former Fort Ord is expected to bring in about 300-400 affordable homes.

Dozens of people attended the ground-breaking ceremony on Monday.

Monterey County Supervisor, Simon Salinas, says the development becomes a little town with about 1,400 homes, several parks and a town center.

County officials say that if all goes well, families will be able to move into the homes next fall.
