The former Fort Ord is more than 45 square miles (28,000 acres) or roughly the size of the County of San Francisco. In 1991, Fort Ord was closed and throughout the 1990's plans were developed to redevelop the base into a thriving new community. The approved Base Reuses Plan provides for the creation of 18,400 new jobs and 10,800 houses by 2020. East Garrison served as a tent encampment and training area for thousands of soldiers during WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. Over 10,000 troops lived and trained at East Garrison before being sent into combat.
